Born in 1950 in Russia. Graduated (Dipl.-Phys.) in 1973 from the Lomonosov State University of Moscow. Degrees of Cand. Sc. in 1976 and of Dr. Sc. in 1984 from the Lomonosov State University of Moscow. Senior staff scientist and research group leader in the Fritz Haber Institute since 1995.

Humboldt Research Award 1993.
